How To Use A Coping Saw

Cutting with a Coping Saw

  • Fix the material to be sawn into a vice, (or Clamp it).
  • Hold the coping saw with a two-handed grip.
  • Stand with feet slightly apart, facing the work.
  • The teeth of the saw face back towards the handle so the saw cuts with the back stroke.
  • Start by drawing the blade back to create a kerf.
  • Continue sawing using regular strokes.
  • When the cut is complete place the saw in the well of the bench or return it to its storage.

Using a coping saw is very easy, the narrow blade allows it to turn in its own kerf. It is much easier to turn the blade if you keep it moving as you turn the saw.
